We've
made it our goal to provide the disabled (those
confined to wheelchairs or legally blind, and youth up to 21 with life-threatening illness) with the opportunity
to experience first-hand the challenges and rewards of big game
hunting in beautiful, remote surroundings.
The
Ballinger Wilderness Retreat is located in the beautiful Wapiti Valley,
about 25 miles from
Cody, Wyoming and about the same from the East Entrance to Yellowstone
Park, in the
heart of Yellowstone wilderness country and its ecosystem. The property
adjoins thousands of acres of public lands and is a winter home to
hundreds of elk and deer, as well as numerous other wildlife species,
including bear, moose and wolf. The property is accessed by a 4.5-mile trip up a 4-wheel
drive road.
We have constructed a wheelchair-accessible hunting blind with features and comforts to make for a safe, successful hunt. The blind is soundproofed, heated, and has a panoramic view. Hundreds of elk and deer winter in the area. Since the beginning of the program in 2000, disabled hunters have harvested well over 30 elk and many quality mule deer bucks. We have had 96 to 98% success on both deer and elk hunts.
5-day
hunt for antlerless elk
3 or 5-day deer hunt
Included in these packages:
Ttransportation between Cody and the Retreat (if needed), and unlimited use of the hunting blind.
Spectacular views. Depending on level of disability, hunters are encouraged to bring their own caregiver. Our facilities are suitable for non-motorized and motorized wheelchairs. Hunters can make their own arrangements for accommodation in Cody as needed. Transportation to and from the hunt can be arranged if needed.
Applications for non-resident elk licenses must be in to the Wyoming Game & Fish between Jan. 1 and Jan. 31. If you've missed this date for the current year, call us and we can give you further information on late drawings. For hunting license applications, visit http://gf.state.wy.us or call (307) 777-4600.
Several airlines provide air service to Cody, the nearest airport. If you have extra time, Cody has numerous things to offer including the world-class Buffalo Bill Historical Center, with the Cody Firearms Museum, Draper Museum of Natural History, Whitney Gallery of Western Art, and the Plains Indian Museum. Cody also offers excellent dining opportunities.
